Welcome to Tamar Ridge

TASMANIA ~ AUSTRALIA

Great wines are made in the vineyard and it is the exceptional fruit grown at the Kayena Vineyard that forms the cornerstone of the Tamar Ridge and Devil’s Corner range of wines. Located on the western banks of the Tamar River, 40 kilometres north of Launceston, the Kayena Vineyard is planted to a range of cool climate varieties including Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Employing state-of-the-art winemaking techniques, but with more than a few concessions to the traditional techniques that have served winemakers for centuries, our winemaking goal is to harness the pristine fruit characters the Kayena Vineyard produces, fashioning them into individual wine styles that speak of their cool origins.

The Devil’s Corner is a section of the Tamar River near our Kayena Vineyard. It is a calm area of refuge for sailors away from the potentially wild waters of Whirlpool Reach to the south, and has been used as such for over 200 years. Devil’s Corner wines are pure, crisp and refreshing, displaying vibrant fruit qualities and great drink ability. Wines to be savoured now rather than cellared.

2008 TAMAR RIDGE KAYENA SAUVIGNON BLANC

Kayena Vineyards Tasmania 13%abv                                                Retail price per 75cl bottle £12.65inc

Case rate price per 75cl bottle £11.85inc

Colour; Bright, pale lemon with tinges of green.

Nose; Fresh, appealing grassy and floral aromas with attractive riper notes of passion fruit, banana and other tropical fruits

Palate; Ripe, mouth filling fruit flavours of lime, passion fruit and gooseberry with plenty of mid-palate weight, there is lovely zippy acidity to provide length and freshness on the finish. The fruit weight is giving a great intensity of flavours without being over-the top. This is a fuller style of Sauvignon Blanc with more demanding flavours that are totally enjoyable and very easy to drink. Unmistakably Sauvignon Blanc without being overwhelmingly so!

2005 TAMAR RIDGE KAYENA PINOT NOIR

Kayena Vineyards Tasmania 14%abv

Retail price per 75cl bottle £15.95inc

Case rate price per 75cl bottle £14.95inc

Colour; Bright, deep dark red with purple and crimson tints.

Nose; Very attractive ripe fruit aromas with hints of mulberry and brambleberry, a touch of rich fruitcake and a dusting of cinnamon spice. Some smoky oak providing additional complexity backs this up.

Palate; Ripe up-front fruit flavours of strawberries and red currants, with just a dash of other rich flavours. This intensity of ripe fruit gives round mouth filling flavours leading to a long gentle finish with fine, silky tannins and excellent length and persistence. Maturation in French oak Barriques is showing through with subtle spiciness and just a little extra grip on the palate without in any way dominating the wine. The overall impression is a satisfying level of flavour with great balance and softness.

SPECIAL ‘TASTER’ OFFER

Vineyards were first established in Tasmania during colonial settlement. Only in relatively recent years, however, has viticulture emerged in the beautiful Tamar Valley to forge a reputation for wines of the highest quality. In less than a decade Tamar Ridge Wines has established its own success story as part of Tasmania’s modern wine industry. The first vines were planted at Tamar Ridge in 1994, and the first vintage was released five years later in 1999. The company today a leading producer of Tasmanian cool climate wines.

TINDALL VINEYARDS

MARLBOROUGH

NEW ZEALAND

Tindall Vineyard is a family owned single vineyard, in the heart of the Marlborough, New Zealand wine region. The name honours Henry Tindall, grandfather of the brothers Clyde and Nigel Sowman who now run the estate.

A Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc with strong ‘red capsicum’ character, fresh ‘zingy’ crispness.

The estate was purchased in 1993 and was originally an extensive cherry orchard and cropping land. Nowadays 2 hectares remain in intensively grown cherries for the premium fresh market.
The first vines were planted in 1995 on alluvial deposits from the Wairau River.

The vineyard comprises 12 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc, 1 hectare Chardonnay, and 4 hectares of Pinot Noir.

The focus is on producing single vineyard vibrant, pungent wines, characteristic of the Rapaura, Marlborough area, through intensive viticulture practices.

Crafting these wines into wonderful expressions is the responsibility of Dave Knappstein the senior winemaker.

The Sauvignon fruit was harvested at cool morning temperatures, immediately de-stemmed, crushed and pressed. The cold settled juice was racked, with settlings fined and filtered, then added back to fermentation. Fermentation was undertaken at 12-14 degrees for 28 days to retain the vibrant fruit. Traditional finings were added prior to bottling.
